In the third mission at the the 11th conflict tournament organized by Conect'r each player had to try to kill his opponents most valuable HQ while trying to have his own most valuable HQ in his opponents deployment zone. In addition each game round we each had to roll on a table for a benefit our most valuable HQ would get for that game round (1: +1S, 2: +1BS, 3: +1WS and +1I, 4: +1T, 5: +1A, 6: 3+ invulnerable save). Deployment was pitched battle.
My memories are a bit fuzzy about this battle, especially since it took me a while to find the time to write his one out.
My opponent's army consisted of two flyers with a special weapon team inside, two small units with a heavy weapon, a small HQ squad and three large (50+ models) units of infantry, each with a commissar and lots of powerweapons. He won the roll to go first and let me choose sides and take first turn. I deployed nothing. He deployed two of his large units out in the open. His HQ was hiding behind one of these. He deployed the flyers on his flanks. He also placed the heavy weapon squads on the roofs of buildings on his flanks. His third large unit was held in reserve. He then scouted the flyers forward.
In my first turn I dropped Logan and the longfangs in front of his troops. My shooty terminators and the rune priest dropped down to the right while the assault terminators dropped down to the right. The assault terminators and the multi-melta longfangs failed to blow up the nearby flyer while the shooty terminatord did take out the other flyer. The runepriest left the squad and cast Murderous Hurricane on one of the large blob squads, slowing down their assault while the other blob squad took some hits from the longfang missiles and stormbolters.
In my opponent's first turn he disembarked the special weapons team from the remaining flyer. The flyer then ook off to hide behind a building near the centre of the board. He left his large blob squad that was affected by murderous hurricane where they were but they shot up the runepriest, killing him. He moved his other large squad up, shot and assaulted Logan and the longfangs. His one heavy weapon and the special weapons team took some shots at the assault terminators.
In my second turn, the assault terminators went after the special weapons squad, shot them and assaulted them, whiping them out and consolidating back towards Logan and the longfangs. The shooty terminators shot at the remainder of the other special weapons squad, hoping to then launch a multi-assault agains the large blob squad. Unfortunately, they whiped them out in the shooting phase. A unit of scouts arrived from my opponent's board edge, shot and assaulted the small HQ squad, killing all but the leader. Either in this combat round or the next, Logan bites the dust.
In my opponent's second turn, his first large blob squad assaults the shooty terminators and whipes them. The heavy weapon team tries to take out a drop pod but fails to hurt it. The other heavy weapon team snipes at my assault terminators. The remaining long fangs hold their ground against the other blob squad.
In my third turn, both a unit of scouts and a unit of grey hunters arrive. The grey hunters get out of their drop pod and open fire on the first blobsquad. The scouts also open fire but are out of charge range. The assault terminators make it into combat with the second blob squad just as the last of the longfangs bite the dust. The scouts kill the last remaining HQ
In my opponent's third turn, his third blobsquad arrives. They come on the board just behind the scouts that killed his HQ unit. He shoots up the recently arrived grey hunters and the only remaining grey hunter with mark of the wulfen runs away. His route will take him right next to my opponent's flyer, so he will propably keep running for a while. The newly arrived blobsquad shoots and assaults the scouts, killing that unit.
In my fourth turn, my last drop pod arrives with grey hunters. Things are not looking well, so I drop it near the middle of the board, intend on taking another shot at the diminished first blobsquad. But during the disembarkation, my eye falls on the fact that the drop pod arrived near his flyer. So I deployed the grey hunters on that side, took some shots at the flyer and destroyed it. The remaining scout unit moves and runs behind the other grey hunter's drop pod, trying to get some cover. The remaining assault terminators succeed in breaking the second blob squad who run away. Unfortunately, as terminators, they cannot pursue.
In my opponnent's fourth turn, he runs the fleeing guardsmen back. He then moves his new blobsquad up and assaults my remaining assault terminators. The remains of the first blob squad go after my unit of scouts. His heavy weapon teams try to take pot shots at the drop pods but in the end only on gets damaged. He uses an order to regroup his fleeing unit, who take cover behind a building.
In turn 5, I take my grey hunters and the now regrouped mark of the wulfen grey hunter and move them into a building on my side of the board, out of sight and range of his troops. There's still an epic fight between my remaining scouts and the first blob squad but after executing all his sergeants, the commissar held his ground. The assault terminators were not so fortunate.
We both succeeded in killing each other's HQ and failed in keeping our own alive so it came down to victory points and kill points, giving my opponent the win. In hindsight, I should have gotten more points as my opponent executed multiple sergeants in the blog squad several times, while this counts as a reroll and you cannot reroll a reroll. I should have known this as I also play with Orks and this also applies to bosspoles.
This third game, and full painting points (for which I was very happy), gave me a final 29th place out of a field of 52 players. I hope to do better next time, and maybe with better match ups.
