This weekend I played my first 6th edition game. I used the list that I plan on taking to the Challenge 7 tournament. My opponent brought a salamanders space marines list consisting off a chaplain with jump pack, a 10 men tactical squads in a rhino with a flamer, multi-melta and sergeant with combi-flamer and powersword, a second 10 men tactical squad in a rhino with a flamer, plasmacannon and sergeant with combi-flamer and powersword, a 10 men assault squad with 2 flamers and a sergeant with powersword, a landraider redeemer with 5 thunderhammer stormshield terminators and a 10 men devastator squad with 3 missile launchers and a lascannon. We rolled for mission and deployment and got The Emperor's Will with Dawn of War deployment. We rolled for warlord traits. I got the personal one that gave me furious charge in my opponnent's deployment zone. My opponent got the personal one that gave him feel no pain while within 3" of an objective. I exchange both my runepriest's powers and took the primaris powers for divination and biomancy.
My opponent won the roll to deploy first. He placed his objective in the middle of his side, just over 6" away from his table edge. I placed my objective between a ruin and a crater on my right side, near the 12" deployment line.
My opponent deployed a rhino with both combat squads of tactical marines behind a ruin next to the objective. He made two combat squads from his devastator marines, one with the sergeant and the lascannon and one with the three missile launchers, and placed them on the upper floors of the ruin. He then placed his landraider on his right side with the termiantors inside. He kept the second tactical squad, also split into combat squads, and the assault marines with this chaplain in reserves.
I deployed both missile launcher long fangs squad on the upper floor of a ruin in the left corner of my deployment zone.
I won the roll to take first turn and my opponent failed to seize the initiative. We forgot to roll for nightfighting. We even forgot to roll for mysterious objectives until turn two or three. When we did, we both got a skyfire nexus but with both sides not having a flyer, this was useless. We also forgot to use our warlord traits during the entire game.
My first drop pod that came down held Logan and the multi-melta longfangs. They dropped down next to my opponent's landraider. My second drop pod was the first unit of plasma grey hunters. I placed them on my opponents objective, but they scattered off the table and were placed in ongoing reserves. The third and last drop pod was the melta grey hunters with the runepriest. They scattered back towards my table edge and so were out of melta range. The runepriest cast Prescience on Logan's squad. The multi-meltas immobilized the landraider and reduced it to 1 hull point. The long fangs shot at his missile launcher devastators. The grey hunters ran forward, trying to make it into a nearby crater.
In my opponent's first turn he moved the rhino from behind the ruin and disembarked both combat squads, one behind the ruin and one forward towards my grey hunters. He also disembarked the terminators from the immobilized landraider. The landraider flamed and shot at Logan and the longfangs, putting a wound on Logan and killing three longfangs. The tactical combat squad also shot at Logan's squad, killing the sergeant. The missile launcher devastators shot at the grey hunters, killing one or two. The terminators assaulted Logan and the remaining multi-melta long fang. He didn't challenge but I did and he declined. He put most of his attacks on Logan and only one terminator on the long fang who miracelously survived. Logan killed three terminators while suffering only one wound in return. The terminators then failed their check and ran off the board.
In my second turn, the grey hunters in ongoing reserves arrived where they were supposed to land first turn. They got out into the ruin but didn't get far due to low difficult terain test. I dropped an empty long fang drop pod near my opponent's left side, blocking movement for his reserved rhino. The second plasmagun squad arrived and I dropped them on my objective. The runepriest cast Prescience on the long fang squad and then left the grey hunter squad and joined the multi-melta longfang. The grey hunters moved up towards the nearest tactical combat squad. Logan left the longfang and joined the grey hunters, giving them relentless this turn. The multi-melta failed to hurt the landraider but the combi-melta from the runepriest took off it's last hull point, giving me first blood. Bolter shots from the grey hunters took down the flamer in the tactical squad. The plasma grey hunters in the ruin shot their pistols at the other tactical combat squad but failed to hurt them. They tried the assault but didn't get there. The grey hunters and Logan assaulted the combat squad, taking one grey hunter casualty from overwatch fire. They then destroyed the combat squad.
In my opponent's turn his second tactical squad in rhino came on but immobilized itself in a crater. The combat squads got out. The plasmacannon combat squad that was behind the ruin took aim at the melta grey hunters, killing a few. The devastators started to pound the plasma grey hunters in the ruin, killing a few. The other combat squad shot at my grey hunters but failed to hurt them.
In my third turn my last empty drop pod came down. I placed it next to the other empty drop pod but it scattered towards the middle of the board, losing a hull point on terrain. The plasmagun grey hunters in the ruin tried to move towards the devastastors but didn't get far. The rune priest left the long fang and joined Logan and the grey hunters who shot and assaulted the nearby tactical combat squad, destroying them.
In my opponent's turn his reserves didn't arrive. He shot with most of his army but couldn't do much damage.
In my fourth turn Logan left the grey hunters and moved towards the multi-melta tactical combat squad. The remaining melta grey hunters (one regular and the mark of the wulfen) moved up towards the rhinos. The runepriest left the grey hunters and moved towards the plasmacannon combat squad. He cast smite and took down several marines who then ran off the board. The multi-melta blew up the immobiled rhino. The long fangs took shots at the other rhino and the missile launcher devastators. The melta grey hunters shot at the multi-melta combat squad and then tried to assault it but didn't make it due to difficult terrain. Logan assaulted the multi-melta combat squad but was killed before he could strike, giving my opponent Slay the Warlord.
In my opponent's fourth turn his assault marines with the chaplain finally arrived. He screened his last combat squad with the still mobile rhino, tanked shocking my grey hunters who moved out of the way. He continued to shoot with his devastators at my plasma grey hunters, slowly killing more and more of them. He then did a multi-assault with his assault marines on the runepriest, the two remaining melta grey hunters and the lone long fang with multi-melta. In another epic assault fail, the mark of the wulfen killed five of his assault marines with rending, while I only lost one grey hunter. He hadn't challenged and when I challenged and he declined I had his power weapon sergeant, who was in base contact with the long fang, stay out of the fight. The chaplain and my runepriest started slapping each other but with AP4 weapons, we both made our saves.
In my fifth turn, I moved the plasma grey hunters (regular, standard and mark of the wulfen) out of the ruin and assaulted the chaplain and the assault marines, popping my banner. The long fangs kept shooting at his devastators, who were reduced to one or two models in the missile launcher combat squad but still had four in the other combat squad. 200 points of grey hunters with wolf guard were camping on my objective and never shot once the entire game. More challenges were issued and he lost the rest of his assault marines with only the sergeant and the chaplain now remaining while I lost the melta squad's mark of the wulfen.
In his sixth turn, he moved the last tactical combat squad up towards the objective, with two in a crater and two outside in the open. The combat between both the runepriest and the assault marines kept going and I lost two of the grey hunters from the plasma squad, leaving only another mark of the wulfen.
In my sixt turn, I focused fire with the long fangs and shot down his last tactical combat squad, giving me the game. I had my objective and he had no scoring units left.
In his sixt turn, he leaped from the ruin with his devastators, off which most of them survived and then tried to come to the aid of the chaplain, assaulting the runepriest but not making the long charge distance.
We didn't get a 7th turn but the game was already decided. I won with 5 (one objective, First Blood and Linebreaker) against 1 (Slay the Warlord). My opponent was extreem unlucky with his dice rolls while mine (except for scatter dice) were rolling above average. We had to look up a lot of rules that came into play (challenges, disembarking, immobilized while coming on from reserves, leaping, ...) so the game took a lot longer than it should have but I really liked the new edition.
