P&B battle report vs Dark Eldar

Last weekend I played another 1750 Paint & Battle Campaign battle against a dark eldar player. His army consisted of a voidraven bommer, a ravager, Vect in his pimped ride with 9 witches, two units of 5 warriors on foot, a unit of 10 witches in a raider, a unit of 5 mandrakes on foot, a cronos parasite engine, a unit of 5 incubi in a raider and a unit of trueborn in a venom. We opted for a mission out of the battlemissions book and took the space marines vanguard mission (3 objectives in my opponent's deployment zone, my opponent got to deploy on the whole half of his table side and all our infantry models were scoring in this battle). My opponent got to deploy first and I had first turn automatically.

My opponent spread out his troops over his deployment zone. He placed the voidraven bommer and the incubi in the raider on the right side, his trueborn and the ravager on the left side. Both witch units, one in the raider and one in Vect's personal skimmer, were placed in the middle. The parasite engine and the mandrakes were also placed near the middle of his deployment zone. One unit of kabalite warriors was placed in the ruined building near one objective and the other unit was placed in terrain to the left board edge.

In my first turn I dropped down Logan and the longfangs in the middle of his transports, the terminators with storm shield to the right of them and the large unit of grey hunters with the rune priest to the left of them. The runepriest left the unit upon disembarkation. The multi-melta longfangs took aim at the ravager but failed to hurt it. The other long fangs took out Vect's ride. The grey hunters destroyed the venom and the terminators shot down the witches' raider. I tried to cast murderous hurricane with my runepriest, made my psychic check but failed the to hit roll on a 1.

In my opponent's first turn he moved his remaining skimmers for optimal shooting positions. His witches move closer to assault and Vect leaves his unit to assault the terminators. My opponent then shot at my units, killing a few models but I come through well enough. He then assaults Logan and the longfangs with the mandrakes, Vect and a witch squad assault my terminators and the other witch squad assaults my grey hunters. I use Logan's Living Legend but fail two out of the three counter-attack rolls. I lose several long fangs but I win the combat and the mandrakes run away. The witches that assaulted my terminators also get defeated and run off the board and my chainfist instantly kills Vect, while I only lose one terminator. The grey hunters pop their standard and hold the witches locked in combat with both sides suffering only minor losses. Logan and the remaining longfangs consolidate towards the incubi raider and my terminators consolidate towards the parasite engine.

In my second turn, both remaining drop pods and one scout squad arrive. The scouts don't get to choose but end up behind the voidraven bommer, in melta-range. The small squad of grey hunters drops in next to the incubi raider. The second unit of wolf guard terminators drops in next to the ravager. The scouts destroy the voidraven bommer, the long fangs try to take out the incubi raider and fail but the lone meltagun from the small grey hunter squad can take it out. The newly arrived terminators only immobilize the ravager, which still has a nice line of sight to my other units near the centre of the board. The runepriest moves into terrain and tries to cast murderous hurricane again, this time on the small unit of warriors but fails his psychic test this time. The other terminators shoot at the pain engine with bolters but fail to hurt it and then follow up with an assault, killing it. Logan and the long fangs assault the incubi. I lose all the longfangs except for one with a multi-melta but Logan kills the remaining incubi. I consolidate back towards the rest of my opponent's forces. The witches that were in assault with my grey hunters, kill off those and consolidate towards the centre. The runepriest assaults the kabalite warriors but suffers a wound in the process, remaining locked in combat.

With his forces severly depleted, my opponent moves the trueborn out of cover and away from my terminators. His witches move towards my first unit of terminators. His shooting and the assault of the witches leaves that terminator unit reduced to only one terminator. His kabalite warriors kill off the runepriest without losing one of their own.

In my third turn my second unit of terminators moves up towards the ravager, but shott at the warriors in cover with their bolters. The scouts move and run towards the middle of the board but they are still al long distance away. The small unit of grey hunters moves up towards the witches. The drop pods shoot at the trueborn and kill them. His small squad of kabalite warriors also suffer a loss from shooting. More shooting from my drop pods kills enough of the other squad of warriors to cause a check and they flee of the board. Logan leaves the lone longfang and joins the unit of grey hunters, extending their assault reach towards the witches. The witches kill the last terminator but the charge from Logan and the grey hunters wipes them from the board. The unit consolidates on the objective.

In my opponent's third turn, he had almost nothing left so he moved his remaining warriors through cover and shot at my troops.

In my fourth turn the second squad of scouts turns up. I can choose from which side they come up and place them right on the objective near the table edge. The terminators move into the rear of the ravager, shoot and assault it but fail to do anything to it (and that with a chainfist in there!). The lone longfang moves up to claim the center objective while the first unit of scouts comes closer. Logan and the grey hunters move up, towards the small unit of warriors.

My opponent moves his remaining warriors once more through terrain and shoots at my terminators and kills another one. I forget that I am still in assault range of the ravager.

In my fifth turn, I move Logan and the grey hunters onto the third objective. The chainfist terminators wakes up and in the assault on the ravager destroys it. We ended the game here as it was more than obvious I had won.

Hobby progress update

I got some work done the last few days. My second unit of terminators, still headless for the moment, have gotten their basecoats on and a badab black wash.

P&B battle report vs Space Wolves

My second 1750 points campaign battle was against another space wolf army. My opponent brought four units of grey hunters in rhinos, two rune priests, a wolf priest, two long fang units (one with plasma cannons and one with missile launchers), a lone wolf with two wolves and one scout squad. We rolled for mission and deployment and got Capture and Control with Pitched Battle deployment. My opponent won the roll to go first and chose table sides and start the game. He placed his objective on top of a bunker in the left corner. I placed mine near the middle of the board in my deployment zone. He deployed his rhinos in the middle of his deployment zone, 2 to the left and 2 to the right and his lone wolf in the middle between them. He put the plasma cannon long fangs on the parapet of the bunker and the other long fangs in a piece of area terrain on the right. He kept his scouts in reserve to outflank behind enemy lines. I tried to seize the initiative and did!

This was the first time we used a true building so we had to look up a lot of the rules. In the end we had to make a few judgement calls as we had a situation that was not covered in the main rulebook. This also was the first battle I felt outclassed. Even worse than the chaos space marine battle last month where I had at least the feeling I had a fighting chance. It didn't help that mathhammer failed me on more than one occasion, killing my own marines when my opponent's rhino's blew up and stuff like that.

In my first turn, I brought down Logan and the longfangs near the bunker. The idea was to blow up the ruin with the multi-melta's and shoot the missiles at a nearby rhino. I scattered onto his troops so the drop pod got to stay where I placed it. To the right of it I dropped my large long fang unit with the runepriest, hoping to shoot at the contents of the rhino that the longfangs were targetting and placing my runepriest in the middle of his so I could try to block his psychic powers. I then dropped the third pod with my full terminator squad in front of his other rhinos, trying to use the drop pod to fill the gap between terrain pieces to slow him down. The multi-melta longfangs shot at the ruin but failed to hit. The other long fangs did blew up a rhino, killing one of my marines in the blast. The runepriest got off Jaws of the World Wolf on the bunched grey hunters but he made all his initiative checks! He then saved almost all of his wounds from the bolter and melta fire from the rest of the unit. The terminators try to melta and plasma another rhino but only succeed in immobilizing it.

In my opponent's turn he disembarks some grey hunters, moves the rhinos out of the way and then starts opening fire on my units. With bolters, missiles and plasmacannons, he destroys all the long fangs except for the terminator and Logan. The grey hunters also take a few casualties and both Logan and the runepriest take a wound. I also lose at least one of the terminators. All units hold though. His lone wolf assaults the nearest drop pod and destroys it.

In my second turn, all of my reservers arrive at once. I outflanked one scout squad next to the bunker so I could melta it. The second squad of scouts arrived on the other side of the board but were out of range of his long fangs with missile launchers so I opted to run them into cover. I dropped the small grey hunter squad on my objective but the drop pod deviated and was not contesting itself.Trying at least to hold my objective, I dropped the second squad of terminators also near my objective. The scouts succeeded in wrecking the bunker but since he had placed his own grey hunter unit in front of the only door, we didn't know what to do with the 'disembarkation' of his long fangs. In the end we decided to consider the building open topped thanks to the parapets, so he could deploy anywhere adjacent. That did mean he could escape the charge of my scouts. Luckily my scouts were mostly out of sight of his long fangs. The terminators charged the grey hunters and lived to tell the tale, unfortunately so did most of his grey hunters. Logan and the wolf guard terminators assaulted the nearby grey hunters in terrain, making Logan strike last but he still killed a lot. My grey hunters and runepriest assaulted the other grey hunters but were killed in the process. He consolidated towards Logan and the wolf guard.

In my opponent's second turn, his scouts came on, right behind my scouts that had made it into terrain near his long fangs with missile launchers. They shot and assaulted them, killing them all. He tried to repair his immobilized rhino but failed. The plasma cannon long fangs tried to shoot at my scouts but only killed one. His grey hunters with the wolf priest destroyed my remaining terminators and consolidated towards my objective. His lone wolf assaulted another drop pod and destroyed that one as well. He assaulted Logan and the terminator with a second squad of grey hunters but Logan, Logan died but my opponent lost the combat and ran away (I could not pursue due to terminator armour). I condolidated the terminator within 6 inch of his fleeing grey hunters.

In my third turn, I moved my remaining terminators into terrain but failed to roll high enough to have a chance to make it into assault so I moved back in stead. The lone terminator shot at the remaining rhino but failed to hurt it. My scouts moved closer to the plasma cannon long fangs, shot them and assaulted them. But they remained locked in combat.

In my opponent's third turn, his fleeing grey hunters ran from the table. He moved his grey hunters with the wolfpriest closer through terrain and shot up my terminators. His scouts and his lone wolf started to close in on my objective from both sides of the table. He moved the last squad of grey hunters out of their transport and towards the objective. They shot the lone wolf guard terminator and killed it. I killed a few long fangs in combat but lost my wolf guard with the powerfist.

In my fourth turn, I shot at the oncomming grey hunters with both my remaining units . I then assaulted with my terminators into his grey hunters in terrain even though I thought it was a bad idea at the time. They died before I could strike. He consolidated towards my grey hunters. My scouts also didn't survive. They either died this turn or the next although it's possible they took the remaining long fangs down with them.

In my opponent's fifth turn, he moved his units closer to my objective and moved the large unit of grey hunters next to his own objective. He assaulted my small squad of grey hunters and only the mark of the wulfen survived while he had one grey hunter and his wolfpriest left. The lone wolf assaulted another drop pod and took it out. We rolled to see if the game continued and it did.

In my turn, I had only one remaining drop pod left to shoot at my opponent but it didn't do anyhting. The mark of the wulfen split his attacks and killed the lone grey hunter but the wolf priest survived and killed the mark of the wulfen, finishing the game for me.

In retrospect, maybe seezing the intiative was a bad idea. I tried to do it so he couldn't smoke his vehicles but if he had moved them more towards the middle and smoked, I could have deep striked behind his lines and tried to go fully for his objective without splitting my forces. Also assaulting with the terminators into terrain was very bad idea. I should have let him assault me. It wouldn't have made any difference anyway (unless I would have failed my counterattack check). When he started deploying his 50+ marines, I knew I was in trouble. I hope to get a rematch soon, so I can think of a way to handle a list like this.

Hobby progress update

I managed to make two more objective markers. I'll try to get these painted next week.

P&B battle report vs Space Marines

My first 1750 points campaign battle was against a vulkan space marine army. My opponent brought three units of 10 tactical marines in rhinos, a landraider redeemer with Vulkan and 5 thunderhammer stormshield terminators, an all lascannon predator and three individual land speeders with heavy flamers and multi-meltas. We rolled for mission and deployment and got Seize Ground with Dawn of War deployment. We got four objectives. We placed three of them in my opponents left table quarter and I placed the last one diagonally across the board in my right corner. I won the roll to go first but let my opponent choose table sides and start the game. He didn't deploy anything and neither did I.

On my opponent's first turn he moved all his vehicles up from his table edge next to each other and popped smoke. From left to right he had a rhino with the first tactical squad, the landraider with vulkan and the terminators, another rhino with the second tactical squad, the last rhino with the third tactical squad and the predator to end the line. This covered most of the centre of his table edge. His three landspeeders moved flat out towards my right table corner and lined up in the middle of the board.

In my first turn, I dropped my 4 suicide wolf guard terminators right in front of his landraider but I scattered to the right. They still got out in close melta-range of the landraider. I dropped my other wolf guard terminator squad in front of his predator. They got out to melta the lascannon threat. I finally dropped Logan and the long fangs on the objective closest to his tank line but I scattered into terrain. Luckily the unit was still in multi-melta range of the landraider. In the shooting phase the multi-melta's blew up the landraider but the other long fangs fail to destroy a landspeeder. The suicide terminators then killed one terminator with all their AP1 and AP2 combi-weapons. The predator however survived the two combi-melta's from my storm shield terminator squad.

In my opponent's second turn, he moved the first rhino 12" towards an objective. He moved the other rhino's a bit and moved his predator behind the third rhino for a cover save. His terminators and vulkan moved out of terrain and towards my long fangs. His shooting killed all but the chainfist terminator from my suicide squad. He also killed one of the other terminators and blew up a drop pod. His terminators shot at my long fangs and then assaulted them. I used Logan's Living Legend and had him strike with his frost axe so he could strike before the terminators. I killed several but he also took down most of my long fangs.

In my second turn, none of my reservers arrived (again!). I moved the lone terminator with the chainfist so he could assault Vulkan in base to base. The other terminators moved up and multi-assaulted the rhino and the predator. The rhino got stunned but the predator was still left undamaged. My chainfist wiffed in combat and failed to hit Vulkan. After the combat, I only had my wolf guard terminator with cyclone missile launcher, Logan and the chainfist terminator left.

In my opponent's third turn, he moved his first rhino even further towards the farthest objective on his table side. The predator moved a bit away and shot at my terminators as did the remaining landspeeders, killing another terminator. In combat, Vulkan and his terminators destroyed my remaining terminators while Logan destroyed his remaining terminators, leaving only the independent characters to face off against each other.

In my third turn, my small squad of grey hunters with the second wolf guard with combi-plasma arrive and wreck the rhino of the first tactical squad. They disembark from the rear hatch. Logan and Vulkan strike at each other, leaving Logan with only one wound but Vulkan makes all of his invulnerable saves. My terminators immobilize the third rhino.

In my opponent's fourth turn, he moves his first tactical squad back into terrain and within claiming distance of an objective. His shooting leaves only my terminator and the mark of the wulfen alive in the small grey hunter squad. His landspeeders and the predator try to kill my remaining terminators and I am now down to two terminators. In combat, I take a risk with Logan and decide to strike with his powerfist. I survive the punishment from Vulkan and he fails one of his invulnerable saves, killing him instantly. I consolidate Logan towards the first tactical squad.

In my fourth turn, both my first scout squad as my other grey hunters squad arrive. The grey hunters deepstrike on the objective where moments ago Logan and Vulkan were still in combat but they scatter in the same direction as before and land on top of the exploded drop pod from my suicide terminators. The grey hunters get out to double melta the third rhino while the rune priest leaves the unit with a nice line of effect on the first tactical squad. The scouts don't get to choose which side they come up and arrive on my left side. I move them on and unluckily they are just outside close melta range of the nearest landspeeder. They do get to shoot the landspeeder and it gets immobilized. The grey hunters blow up the third rhino. The rune priest succeeds in casting Jaws of the World Wolf but he makes all his intiative checks. The two remaining terminators assault the tactical marine occupants of this rhino but as they are forced to assault into terrain, they strike last. I have to make only two regular armour saves and roll double ones, killing them both before they can strike. Both the remaining models from the small grey hunter squad and Logan assault the first tactical squad and decimate them leaving only the sergeant alive but I do lose the terminator.

In my opponents fifth turn, he disembarks the second tactical squad, spreads them out and moves the rhino so it contests the nearest objective. He also moves his landspeeder near the right table edge in a perfect flaming position of my first scout squad and kills three regular scouts. His third tactical squad opens up fire with their bolters while his nearby landspeeder flames the space wolves, killing several grey hunters. Logan finished off the sergeant and consolidates towards the second tactical squad. The lone grey hunter with mark of the wulfen consolidates towards the objective in cover.

In my fifth turn, my second scout squads arrive. Again, I do not get to choose where they arrive but they do show up on the same side as the others. I place them next to the landspeeder that just flamed my first scout squad. They destroy it while my other scout squad nocks off the weapons on the already immobilzed landspeeder. My rune priest moves into cover, contesting the objective that is also contested by the rhino. He then uses Jaws of the World Wolf on the second tactical squad, killing several including the sergeant. My remaining grey hunters move into the crater that holds the third tactical squad, shoots them and assaults them. Even with using the wolf standard, the result is not great but we remain locked in combat. Logan assaults the second tactical squad, kills enough for a check and they run away towards their nearby table edge. Logan consolidates to within 6 inches. We have a bystander roll to see if the game continues and it does!

In his sixt turn, the remaining models of the second tactical squad run off the board. He then uses both their rhino and the predator to tank shock the lone grey hunter off the objective in cover but fails both his dangerous terrain checks. He then uses his last landspeeder to turboboost in terrain to contest the objective. The combat between the third tactical squad and the grey hunters continues but they remain locked in combat. The first scout squad destroys the landspeeder they were still in contact with.

In my sixt turn, both scout squads start moving towards the other side of the board. My mark of the wulfen model moves through terrain, shoots his pistol at the land speeder and then assaults it but fails to hurt it. Logan moves towards the combat between the grey hunters and the tactical squad and tries to assault but doesn't roll high enough on his difficult terrain check. The combat between the third tactical squad and the grey hunters continues but they remain locked in combat. We have a bystander roll to see if the game continues and it does again!

In my opponent's seventh turn, he moves his landspeeder so it still contests and shoots at my grey hunter with mark of the wulfen with everything he has left but fails to kill it. The combat between the third tactical squad and the grey hunters continues but they remain locked in combat.

In my last turn, I shoot and assault the landspeeder with my mark of the wulfen but fail to destroy it. Logan assaults the tactical squad and wipes the remaining space marines. My remaining grey hunters consolidate back towards the nearest objective but only roll a 3. I move them but believe they will be out of range. My opponent then measured and found them to just be in range to claim the objective, giving me the win.

P&B battle report vs Imperial Guard

My last 1500 points campaign battle was against a renegade imperial guard army (but still using the IG codex). My opponent brought three units of penal legionaires, a vendetta, a basilisk, two units of psychers in chimeras, two units with snipers, a unit of demolition corps, two units of regular guardsmen each with a single autocannon heavy weapon, a full autocannon heavy weapon team, a primaris psycher and the IC that can appear out of nowhere. We rolled for mission and deployment and got Seize Ground with Pitched Battle deployment. We got the full five objectives and spread them over the board (three in a triangle on the right side of the board, one in the left upper table corner and one in the left lower table corner). I won the roll to go first but let my opponent choose table sides and start the game.

My opponent deployed his sniper command squad on the roof of a ruined building, the heavy weapon team on the second and third floors of that building and the basilisk on the first floor. His vendetta was placed to the left of the building with the demolition team inside. He placed both psycher units in their rides on opposite sides of his deployment zone with two units of penal legionaires between the vendetta and one chimera and one between the building and the other. His second sniper squad was also placed on this side of the building. He then placed one of his regular squads on both end of his lines. He kept his IC in reserve and placed the primaris psycher with his demolition corps.

I deployed nothing. He made a scout move with with his penal legionaires and with his vendetta, placing it in the centre of the board.

On his first turn he moved most of his infantry forward and ran them in the movement phase, heading for objectives on my side of the board. His left chimera moved forward, getting another 6 inches of movement from the road.

On my first turn I dropped Logan and the long fangs behind his forward surging lines. The multi-melta's shot at the basilisk and blew it up while the missile launchers took out the vendetta. My suicide squad of terminators (two combi-melta's and the chainfist) dropped to the right and took out the chimera. A large squad of grey hunters with the rune priest dropped to the right. The runepriest cast murderous hurricane on his regular squad while the rest of the unit also shot at them. They failed their save and ran towards the table edge.

On his second turn, he moved two units of penal legionaires further towards objectives on my side of the board. The other units openend fire on my space wolves. I lost all of the terminators, all my long fangs except for Logan and the wolf guard terminator and several of my grey hunters.

In my second turn, none of my reserves arrived. Although he has suffered a wound already, the runepriest splits off from the grey hunters and goes in the direction of the penal legion squad that went for the objective in the lower left corner. The rest of the grey hunters went for the psychers's transport. Logan and the wolf guard went through terrain towards the regular troops unit. They shoot at the unit - the missiles also kill a few off the nearby demolition corps - and then charge them. They win the combat and the remaining three flee. Logan and the terminator consolidate towards the demolition corps. The runepriest shoots murderous hurricane at the penal legionairres, killing a few but they hold their ground. The grey hunters shoot and assault the chimera, causing numerous hits but not destroying it.

On my opponent's third turn, his fleeing unit runs just short of the table edge. He moves his other infantry a bit more towards the objectives on my side of the board. The primaris psycher leaves the demolition corps and joins the unit of snipers. The psychers get out of the crumbling chimera. Thanks to one of his orders, the fleeing unit gets back in the fight. The psychers (and other shooting) kill most of my grey hunters, leaving only the mark of the wulfen alive. In the assault phase, the mark of the wulfen wrecks the chimera. Logan takes another wound from shooting.

In my third turn my first unit of scouts arrive right next to his psychers on the left. They shoot and assault them, wiping them. The lone mark of the wulfen grey hunter moves on an objective. Logan and the terminator assault the demolition corps and wipe them, consolidating on the nearby objective. My runepriest shoots at the penal legionaires and kills all of them but one.

In my opponent's fourth turn, he succeeds in killing Logan and the terminator and the rune priest. My scouts were safe out of line of sight and my lone grey hunter survived the shooting that was heading his way.

In my fourth turn, both remaining drop pods with small squads of grey hunters led by a wolf guard terminator arrived. The first dropped right in front of his primaris psycher and the snipers, shot all they had at them and killed them all. The other one landed on my side of the board with a clear shot at the penal legionaires holding a nearby objective. Their shooting was more effective, killing several of the guardmen. My wolf scouts moved behind cover towards the lone penal legionaire holding an objective in the lower left corner.

In my opponent's fifth turn, he split off the priest from the squad that got back into the game. The priest assaulted the nearest drop pod and wrecked it. The remaining guardmen went for the nearest objective. His shooting against the second grey hunters' squad killed all but the terminator, the meltagun and the mark of the wulfen. My other grey hunter got off much better.

In my fifth turn, both grey hunters' squads went for nearby units. The terminator and the mark of the wulfen went for the remaining penal legionaires and shot them all down before they could even assault. The other squad went for the psychers as they were standing on an objective. They shot up some psychers and then assaulted them, wiping them. The scouts moved out into the open and shot at the lone penal legionaire, killing him. A few drop pod stormbolters shot down the lone guardmen on the objective on my opponent's table edge. Another drop pod stormbolter killed enough of his guardsmen on the right to force a check which they failed and they ran off. We rolled to see if the game continued and it did!

In my opponent's turn, the guardmen ran off the table. His priest moved up and assaulted another drop pod, wrecking it as well. Shooting from his remaining units, killed the meltagun from the one squad of grey hunters.

In my turn six, I moved the largest grey hunters squad on the objective in cover behind the wrecked chimera. My lone mark of the wulfen moved back, still in range of the objective but putting as much distance between him and the priest. My small unit of grey hunters also moved to claim an objective. We rolled again to see if the game would continue and once more we get a 7th turn.

In my opponent's turn, he moved his priest over towards my lone mark of the wulfen grey hunter and assaulted it, killing it. His shooting kills both the terminator and the mark of the wulfen, dropping me to holding only one objective. He has no scoring troops left, so he can only go for the draw. And then the rest of his shooting goes towards my last grey hunters' squad. He kills enough to force a leadership check which I promptly fail and my unit runs away from the objective.

In my last turn, my grey hunters automatically regroup thanks to And They Shall Know No Fear and move back up to the objective, giving me the win. He had only 9 models left on the board. I also had nine infantry left and three drop pods.
